Andy Neff

Andrew Neff was born and raised on the family farm in Erhart, Ohio. Neff Road was named for this family, who arrived in the US in the 1700’s from Alsace-Lorain.   He graduated from Belden High School in 1937.

Andy served in the Merchant Marines during WW II. After the war he became active in the Carpenters and Millwrights Union. He taught and practiced that trade and was associated with US Steel, from which he retired.

He always had an interest in Mark Twain, and a flair for portraying that fascinating person. In that role he talked to various communities about the region’s history, and educated and entertained many audiences.

When preparing for the Valley City Sesquicentennial celebration in 1962, Andy conceived the idea of holding a Frog Jump for the kids. He wrote Calaveras County frog jump officials and obtained information on how to start. Andy and Duane Nafztger were the two founders and long time promoters of the Valley City Frog Jump. It has been held every years since; August 2001 was be the fortieth consecutive Jump.  And it was gratefully dedicated to Andy.

Valley City is usually a small, quiet community. But on that one day in August it enjoys an international reputation. The media love to report on kids jumping frogs, and the footage they film has been shown around the globe. The Governor of Ohio proclaimed Valley City the Frog Jumping Capital of Ohio, a statement reiterated by signs on the major roads into the community. Local merchants carry and sell frog merchandise of all kinds. And through www.valleycity.org, people around the globe learn about frogs and follow the activities of the annual August event.

This international reputation and fame is attributable to those two men, Andy and Duane, who just wanted something for the kids to do during a celebration. Their legacy surprises even them, but it lives on.

Andrew Neff passed away at age 84 on March 31, 2003.  May he jump to that great frog pond in the sky.
Andy, we are glad you came our way.
